How many days until my next birthday?
Updated September 7, 2026 · My Birthday Almanac

Counting down to a birthday is one of the small pleasures of the calendar. The maths is simple in principle, but there are a couple of edge cases worth knowing — especially if you were born on 29 February. Here is how the countdown works, the tricky bits, and some milestones worth a longer wait.
How the countdown is calculated
Finding the number of days until your next birthday takes three steps:
- Take your birth month and day and pair it with the current year.
- If that date has already passed this year (or is today), roll it to next year.
- Count the whole days from today to that date. That count is “days until my birthday.”
For example, if today is 7 September and your birthday is 20 November, it has not happened yet this year, so you count the days from 7 September to 20 November — 74 days. If instead your birthday were 1 March, it has already passed, so you count to 1 March next year. Because it counts real calendar days, any leap day in between is included automatically, so the answer is exact.
Weeks and months until, too
Once you have the day count, the other units follow: divide by 7 for weeks, and roughly by 30.4 for months. A countdown of 74 days is about 10 and a half weeks, or just under two and a half months.
The 29 February question
If you were born on 29 February, your exact birth date only exists in leap years. In common years most “leaplings” celebrate on 28 February or 1 March. A countdown tool has to pick a rule, so it typically targets the real 29 February in the next leap year, or the nearest day in between — worth checking if you are a leap-day baby, since the two choices can differ by a day.
Which weekday will it be?
A countdown is more useful with the weekday attached — is it a Saturday you can celebrate, or a Wednesday you have to work through? The same calculation reveals the weekday your birthday lands on; see what day of the week you were born for why that weekday shifts each year.
Half-birthdays and time zones
A half-birthday is simply six months (about 182–183 days) from your birthday — popular for summer children whose real birthday falls in the school holidays. And a small subtlety: “days until” is measured in your time zone, so a countdown can read a day differently for someone on the other side of the world.
The birthday paradox
A famous piece of birthday maths: in a room of just 23 people, there is already a better-than-even chance that two of them share a birthday, and with 70 people it is above 99.9%. It feels wrong because we instinctively think about people sharing our birthday, when the real question is any pair matching — and there are a lot of pairs. It is a fun fact to test at your next party.
Milestone birthdays worth counting to
Beyond the next one, some birthdays deserve a longer countdown — the round decades (30, 40, 50), and quirky “alternative” milestones measured in other units: your 10,000th day alive (about 27 years and 4 months), or your one-billionth second (about 31 years and 8 months). The age calculator tracks your next birthday and these grand milestones at the same time, updating live.
